Democratic Libya

Tuesday, 13 December 2011

Freedom of speech is ingrained in us as an American people; we can hardly imagine a life without this fundamental right.  We support it as a nation knowing that it is one of the pillars of democratization.  Today, I’m writing you from the newly democratic Libya where I’m reminded that the free speech we honor takes many non verbal forms.

Imagine being an artist who could not express themselves for 42 years under a repressive regime.  I’ll let these street murals speak for themselves.

Some of them are funny,
much of it is good,
and all of it is political.
